Computer Simulation of Headrest Design Parameters and their Effect on Whiplash l njury Prevention
نویسندگان
چکیده
Although traditional headrests are common in most passenger automobiles, they have resulted in only a 20 -30% reduction in whiplash injuries (Nygren 1 985). In response to the limited effectiveness of traditional headrests, automobile manufactures have recently developed more advanced headrests and whiplash prevention mechanisms (Sigi 1 998, and Viano 1 993). The objective of this study was to develop a computer tool which can be used to provide design guidelines for whiplash prevention devices and evaluate the effectiveness of various approaches. Specifically a computer model of the cervical spine was developed, and a parametric study of headrest design parameters was performed, including headrest stiffness, damping, and initial head-headrest gap.

Proposing a 2D Dynamical Model for Investigating the parameters Affecting Whiplash Injuries
This paper proposes a 2D dynamical model for evaluating parameters affecting whiplash. In fact a four segment dynamical model is developed in the sagittal plane for the analysis. The model response is validated using the existing experimental data and is shown to simulate the "S-Shape" and "initial upward ramping" kinematics of the cervical spine and the resulting dynamics observed in human and...
متن کاملParametric analysis of vehicle design influence on the four phases of whiplash motion.
OBJECTIVE The objective is to establish a basis for motor vehicle test requirements that measure component contributions to Whiplash Associated Disorders (WAD). METHODS Selected vehicle design features are evaluated with regard to their relative contributions to WAD measures. The motion of the occupant cervical spine associated with WAD is divided into four phases: retraction, extension, rebo...

In order to understand the total consumption of buildings and accurately calculate how much energy each building uses, taking in consideration all the building's lifecycle phases is essential. In order to select the correct methodology for the main study, the researcher began with the determination and the parameters that would have been researched, as well as the analysis and comparison of the...
متن کاملEffects of Reflexive Cervical Muscle Contraction on Whiplash Kinematics and Injury
The ability of neck muscles to react in time to mitigate whiplash injury in unaware occupants remains unclear. A validated head-neck computer model was implemented to determine the effect of reflexive contraction on capsular ligament elongations in whiplash. Contraction parameters were chosen for the maximum kinematic effect. Contraction decreased segmental angulations less than 10% during the ...
متن کاملPrediction of Nitrogen Injection Performance in Conventional Reservoirs Using the Correlation Developed by the Incorporation of Experimental Design Techniques and Reservoir Simulation
Enhanced oil recovery using nitrogen injection is a commonly applied method for pressure maintenance in conventional reservoirs. Numerical simulations can be practiced for the prediction of a reservoir performance in the course of injection process; however, a detailed simulation might take up enormous computer processing time. In such cases, a simple statistical model may be a good approach to...
